The objectives of this research were: (1) to study a history

of Songkran the festival, (2) to study the Songkran festival of a community, Sakaew Sub-district, Peoynoi district, Khonkaen province, and (3) to study Buddhist principles in the Songkran festival of a community, Sakaew Sub-district, Peoynoi district, Khonkaen province. This was a qualitative research to collect all data by means of in-depth interview from 15 informants: monks, the municipal clerk. All collected data was analyzed with the descriptive analysis according to the inductive method.

A result of this study was found in the following aspects.

                 1. A history of Songkran festival was the oldest legend  in a long tradition mentioned in the ancient time. The legend of Songkran festival was believed that   7 daughters with weapons and various vehicles were responsible for taking Kabil-brahm's cut head and making a circle around the Stupa. Later, the legend was rewritten that 7 daughters were compared with 7 days of a week. When the sun came to Aries and begun the New Year, Miss Songkran was named according to the name of such a day. It was a time to take Kapila-brahm's head into the cerebration on the New Year. A history of the Songkran Day was a legend believed in a long time. The Sansakrit word "Songkran" meant going up, stepping up or moving, i.e. the sun coming to the new grandeur or the New Year on April 13, 14 and 15. It was meant that the Sangkran day meant stepping up or moving to the Songkran year. Wan Nao was 'a day of staying'. The word 'Nou' meant staying. It was meant the other day after the Songkran Day when the sun went up to the grandeur. Wan Thaloeng Sok meant 'a day going to the new year'. It was a day of going to the new Thai minor era. That the day of the New Year was the third day after the Songkran day was done with the great belief that going to the same place was a tradition of Thai New Year taken from the Thai ancient time.

                 2. The Songkran festival of a community, Sakaew Sub-district, Peoynoi district, Khonkaen province was an activity taken from the ancient time in order to conserve the culture and the Songkran festival, it was to make merit in Buddhism on the Songkran days: April 13, 14 and 15. It was a time of presenting the gratitude towards the elder, respected people for goodness of living through the coming new year. The important activity on the Songkran day was a time of making merit for all Thai Buddhists. Such an activity included taking food into the almsbowl, giving monks food, watering a monk's hand, watering the elder people's hand for great respect and gratitude, sacrificing merit to the dead relatives, taking sand to the temple (creating the sand Stupa), requesting five precepts and practicing meditation. All of them were a valuable activity organized on the Songkran Day.

                 3. The Buddhist principles in the Songkran festival, daily practiced by the community, Sakaew Sub-district, Peoynoi district, Khonkaen province, were worshiping the holy things, gratitude, harmony of the community, Sangahavatthu for love, compassion and help, Sāraniya-dhamma for living together with happiness, five precepts and Bhāvanā for development of a body, morality, mind and wisdom.
